Providence Heart & Vascular Institute has again been recognized for its quality outcomes. For the ninth consecutive rating period, the Institute has received a “3 star” rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), which denotes the highest category of quality.
The rating places Providence Heart and Vascular Institute among the top 10% of 1000 heart programs in the nation. Providence has received the “3 star” rating since the inception of the comprehensive rating system developed by STS in 2006 that allows for comparisons regarding the quality of cardiac surgery among hospitals in the United States.

Providence Hospitals has named Daniel Apple as its second recipient of the Dr. Preston A. Jones Memorial Scholarship. Apple, a fourth-year medical student at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, plans to enter a career in ophthalmology upon his graduation in May 2011.
The $2,500 scholarship is awarded on an annual basis to assist an outstanding medical student and honor the legacy of the late Dr. Jones’ love of the medical profession.

Members of the community, hospital staff and volunteers joined Providence Hospitals on February 8 in the Rotunda of the Statehouse in Columbia, South Carolina for the hospital's 2011 Red Dress Rally. Speakers included South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley; Conni Gardner, senior vice president of the Mid-Atlantic Affiliate of the American Heart Association; Juana Quick, a survivor of heart disease; and George Zara, president & CEO of Providence Hospitals, a ministry of the Sisters of Charity Health System.

Providen Hospitals, a ministry of the Sisters of Charity Health System, recently named David Kilgore as director of pharmacy services. Kilgore served as the hospital’s interim director of the pharmacy for four months prior.

The Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina was asked to participate on a panel for Leadership Columbia Health and Human Services Class Day on February 8, 2011. In addition to the foundation, other Sisters of Charity Health System ministries, including Healthy Learners and Providence Hospitals, as well as foundation grantees were present during the day.
